The Project to End Human Trafficking (PEHT) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2004 as part of the anti-slavery movement.

The initial goal of the founders was not to begin an organization, but simply to offer educational lectures about human trafficking. They quickly found that the need for information about slavery was great and they consulted with similar groups, such as Free the Slaves, to determine the best way to move forward with their work.

Terre Haute, Indiana Human Rights Day

Indiana State University celebrated their 9th Annual Terre Haute Human Rights Day conference. The focus of the event was on Article 4 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.” Dr. Burke of PEHT delivered the Keynote Address for the program. PEHT in Bethesda, Maryland

Speaker Giovanna W. Hernandez conducted a presentation and a viewing of multiple documentary clips on Human Trafficking in Bethesda, Maryland. Attendees of the presentation were students of the University of Maryland College Park. After watching the videos and listening to the presentation, students participated in a discussion and asked questions about statistical data and facts.

Hernandez held a presentation on Human Trafficking in Panama in the city of Colon.  This event was in collaboration with Panama World Trade and Investment Foundation (PWTIF), which is a non-profit foundation that empowers and educates both adults and impoverished children from Panama. Enslaved in the Modern World

Enslaved in the Modern World is a week-long series of events that are being put on to bring light to the international problem of human trafficking and modern day slavery.

Enslaved in the Modern World is a project co-sponsored by Global Solutions Pittsburgh and the Project to End Human Trafficking.

Anti-Human Trafficking Legislation - Pennsylvania

Working collaboratively with those in the anti-slavery movement across the state of Pennsylvania, Julie Janovsky, a policy specialist at Polaris Project in Washington, DC has spearheaded the introduction of two pieces of legislation:

  1. To create a state-wide Human Trafficking Task Force
  2. To mandate posting of the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline, in certain establishments (e.g., hotels, rest areas on major highways, restaurants).

Citizens for Global Solutions

The Project to End Human Trafficking will facilitate a one-hour press conference on Wednesday, September 23rd as part of a day-long series of press conferences hosted by the Washington, DC based group Citizens for Global Solutions. The purpose of the press conferences is to take advantage of the G-20 meetings to bring attention to various human rights issues and to call for increased accountability for these issues by the most advantaged and powerful countries.

The Peoples' Summit in Pittsburgh

The Project to End Human Trafficking in collaboration with other local groups is co-sponsoring the Peoples' Summit here in Pittsburgh over the next few days.

The Peoples’ Summit, is a program of informed dialogue about the economic, social and political problems facing the world, that will take place from Saturday, September 19 to Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at several locations in the city of Pittsburgh. Some of the speakers for the summit are Howard Zinn, Walden Bello, James Quilligan, Tim Stevens, State Senator Jim Ferlo, Carl Redwood, Molly Rush, Anthony Arnove and Jeremy Scahill.
