Domestic Servitude Sex Trafficking U.S. Releases 2007 Trafficking in Persons Report The U.S. State Department releases its annual report on human trafficking and the efforts worldwide to combat slavery in the 21st century. In every country in the world, women, men and children are deprived of their basic human rights. They are coerced or deceived into conditions of slavery. Many are starving, live in unsanitary conditions, and experience almost constant fear for their safety and the safety of their families. Human trafficking refers to the recruitment, transport, sale, or purchase of individuals through force, fraud or other coercive means for the purpose of economic exploitation. There are a wide range of estimates on the extent to which slavery exists today. The International Labor Organization (ILO) of the United Nations (UN) estimates that there are 12.3 million people enslaved at any given time. The State Department of the United States (2007) reports that 800,000 to 900,000 individuals are trafficked across international borders yearly, with approximately 100,000 more individuals trafficked within the borders of their own countries. Women and girls comprise approximately 80% of transnational victims of trafficking and up to 50% of transnational victims are under the age of eighteen. The majority are trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation. The Project to End Human Trafficking (PEHT) is a non-profit organization that promotes human rights, in particular the rights of women and children. The purpose of the Project is to work against trafficking in persons, specifically trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, by raising public awareness of this atrocious human rights violation and through the extension of supportive psychosocial services to victims. |
