Sponsor PEHT in the DC Stop Modern Slavery Walk!
Posted by on September 6, 2011
On October 22, 2011 PEHT will be joining hundreds of other people participating in the DC Stop Modern Slavery Walk on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The goal of the Walk is to raise awareness about human trafficking while raising money to help fight this issue. Human trafficking may not directly touch your life in a noticeable way but it exists in our communities.
Will you help PEHT take up the fight by making a tax-deductible donation? In addition, I would like to invite you to attend the Walk, which will be on October 22, 2010.
Thank you in advance for your support! Please make your donations online at

The Project to End Human Trafficking Baltimore Division's intern D'Nise Kaalund made a human-trafficking presentation before over 100 residents for the International Youth Conference at the Colon Chamber of Commerce in Panama on June 3, 2011.
D'Nise highlighted the awful risks victims encounter and the dangers to which they are exposed, such as slave work and poor health. Stress was given to local alternatives residents can utillize to avoid and eventually eliminate human trafficking. The presentation was well received and followed with a networking session of encouragement and t-shirt giveaways. Panama We Care Organization plans on continuing community outreach to encourage residents to seek alternatives to being victims.

Carnegie Mellon University students Jessica Dickson Goodman, Ismail Smith-Wade-El and members of the Project to End Human Trafficking assisted Pittsburgh City Councilman Doug Shields in developing a bill aimed at licensing massage parlor employees in the city of Pittsburgh. The bill would force businesses to open their books to auditors and create a means for police to uncover any possible illegal activities, the bill also includes a list of operational requirements for massage parlors.
"Councilman Shields is committed to ending human slavery in Pittsburgh, and this bill is a testament to his dedication," commented Project director Mary Burke. "We truly appreciate the attention that he has brought to this issue and his recognition that this is a problem in Pittsburgh; we can no longer turn a blind eye to the fact that this is happening in our city."
Details of the press conference on April 18, 2011, including an audio interview with the Project's Jamie Turek , can be found here.
